Children learn everything they know from their parents. As, parents we are responsible for exposing our children to different things and giving them skills they need to make it in the world. Talking to your child is one of the best ways to build good communication skills. So, talk with your child. No matter how old they are, talking to them is one of the most important things that you can do to help them grow up to be confident and secure. Here are just a few tips:
Ask questions that require more than just a yes or no answer
-Encourage your child to talk about a story they read or about their day at school. For example instead of saying did you have a good day at school say tell me all about your day.
-Value your child's answers
-Even if it doesn't make sense to you don't criticize the child for their answers. Just listen closely and act interested. This will teach your child that you value what they have to say.
Read stories or tell stories
-This is a great way to build vocabulary and creativity. Just start a story about a fly on the wall and take turns telling what happened next. -"The purpose of parenting is to protect and prepare our children to survive and thrive in the kind of society in which they live"
Understand that every child is unique and grows at his or her own pace.
The more we know about what to expect as our children grow and develop, the more we can do to be better parents.
